I've started going back to school, aiming to get a philosophy degree. This thread is here for the intellectual discussion of things I discover in my classes, and the eventual degradation into penis jokes.

First up, I never knew anything about Francis Bacon's contributions to philosophy. Today I learned that he presented a set of four categories of mistakes everyone falls into. The most interesting to me was the area of language. He says people trick themselves into believing things must be true because of the way language is used. For instance, I can make sentences that look similar, but have very different implications. I have a wallet. I have a body. I have a mind. I have a soul. I have an idea. The basic structure of those are the same, which can make you think that the subjects of those sentences must all be similar in that they are a tangible thing. I can show you my wallet, and I can show you my body. Those are tangible things that you can observe with your five senses. I can explain my idea and we can discuss it, which makes it a kind of thing too. But can I show you my mind or my soul? Are they actual things? And when I say I have a mind or soul, what is the "I" there?

Everyone treats their mind and soul exactly the same as their wallet when it comes to language.

This thread is called Philosterbating because I'm pretty sure I'm the only one interested in this stuff, so it will probably be me ejaculating nonsense like this all over. Why won't you have philosophy sex with me? :(

Disgaea MCBB style

In my never ending Disgaea 2 game I decided to make a team full of friends of mine. Matt, Sheri, and Dan were lucky enough to have me remember they exist before I had all 10 members.

Now one of the cool things about Disgaea 2 is that you can rename equipment. So I've been trying to choose name/description combinations that might fit you guys, or at least be amusing. But I want your input on these, since they are the characters that are representing you! So here are the ideas I've come up with, and if you can think of anything I should change, let me know. Remember, I can only change item names, not descriptions. If you get into it enough that you want to find replacement items, there's a list of them towards the bottom of this page.

Matt
Class: Heavy Knight
Weapon: Spear
Description:Matt is an entirely self-sufficient unit. He's got good defense, high HP, enough offense to get the job done, and healing magic. He can wade into a cluster of enemies and take them apart. Any damage he might take he can easily heal. The downside is he has low move and jump, so it might take a while to get there. Spear skills help make up for that, since they can move him around.
Equioment:
Mostly Cloudy - Built with the latest space-age technology.
Dating - Hard. Very hard. Really, very hard.
Netflix - Works with your entire entertainment system.
Hapa - Feel as strong as a hero.

Sheri
Class: Magic Knight
Weapon: Sword; Mid-level elemental magic
Description: Sheri is a pretty straightforward attacker. As a magic knight she has access to the mid-level elemental spells, as well as weapon enchantments and elemental buff and debuff spells. Sword skills offer a mix of strong single target attacks and multi-target attacks. Defensive stats are a little lacking, so she relies on her good attack stats to take out enemies quickly.
Equipment:
Cardboard Tube: Mythical sword dredged from ancient times.
Lulu Boobs: Knock all the boys dead at the next dance.
MCBB Moderator: Provides authority beyond reproach.
Kikyo Pants: Seen at conventions all over the netherworld.

Dan
Class: Male Fighter
Weapon: Axe
Description: Dan hits things. He hits them really hard. Sporting a physical attack stat that, at current count, is nearly 20,000 points over the next highest party member, there is no question of making paste out of anything. The downside is that axe skills only hit one thing at a time. If he has to face multiple enemies alone, he might end up getting hurt despite his good defense and HP. Dan also uses some stat increasing magic, just in case he wants to hit things even harder.
Equipment:
Awesome - They finally combined lasers and axes.
Ohvermie Coat - Smells like the Dark King.
The Missus - Desires only anarchy and galactic meltdown.
Chinese Buffet - Gird yourself for a galactic battle!

And just for fun, here's Rhys!
Class: Prinny
Weapon: Blue Monster Weapon; Star magic
Description: Being a Prinny, Rhys uses mostly Prinny skills to attack. But Rhys also has a ranged option in star magic. Prinnies normally aren't very good spell casters, but that doesn't stop Rhys from trying. His stats are pretty average all around, but he can't do any healing, buffing, or debuffing. Remember not to throw him!
Equipment:
The Player - Absolute power corrupts absolutely.
Guitar Lessons - Increases your ability to rock by 300%.
Pretension - We are moved to tears by the size of it.
Snack Time - Unleash the eternal abyss.
