Maybe the forum briefly showed up at the top of some Google results page.

My old Kenneth Cole Reaction black square-toe loafers are getting really worn. They're wrinkling despite my best shoe tree efforts, they're scuffed past what polish will help with, and they just kinda feel loose. I was extra conscious of it because they've become my default dailies when I'm not wearing something that suggests another pair. And my female coworker kept looking at my shoes surreptitiously. :p

Tonight, I went and got new Florsheims that are stylistically similar, and now I feel like a king. Does that make me TEH GAY? I'm up to 10 pair if you count my slipper moccasins, sandals, and running shoes.

schally
03-18-2005, 11:23 AM
Pretty gay, good buddy.

I've got three pairs of shoes: work shoes, running shoes, sandals. I was gonna get hiking boots, so that'll bump me up to four. Hope that Rhys has like sixteen pairs and you'll come out about average.

Rhys

I've got three. Matt's the gayest.

dnl2ba
03-19-2005, 01:20 AM
Hey you fag-fucking fag fuckers, any future use of the term "gay" when applied to me must be swapped with "metro." This is more socially sensitive and will keep my from crying at night. While I suck dicks.

I mentioned that I found some cat on my car's hood some morning last week (http://www.livejournal.com/users/fezwashu/126134.html?thread=252086#t252086). I guess the hood is warm at night after I get home, and the car cover makes it softer than the other cars. The cat was there again today, and damnit, there's white/orange cat hair all over my black wool coat now.

It won't even say harro. It scurries away when I get close. I wanna make friends! PLS PRETTY PLS? Should I just show up with a slab of salmon or something? Tuna sandwich?

Gump

My backyard has become a haven for strays. Maybe it's the cat statue marking the grave of my old cat (my mom's idea, not mine), but we've had several cats lurking in bushes, raising kittens, sleeping under the car, and serenading each other. It's kinda weird, but kinda cool, too.

HOW MANY SHOES

Gump
03-19-2005, 03:19 AM
I have a pair of boots that I wear everywhere because my mom threw away my old pair of shoes. They have huge holes in them now; I desperately need to replace them. I also have a pair of dress shoes, which I never wear.

Why are you being so metro tonight?

Ah-ha, a Google-fu master helped me dig this up.

How many pairs of shoes can guys own and still have ham sammich privileges? (http://episteme.arstechnica.com/eve/ubb.x/a/tpc/f/34709834/m/521005358631/p/1)

So I've got:

Eddie Bauer moccasins
Clarks sandals
Adidas running shoes
Caterpillar steel-toe hiking boots
Hitchcock black dressy wing-tips (that I didn't buy myself and probably haven't worn in like 6 years, so uh, maybe it's time to get new ones)
Kenneth Cole black casual cap-toes
Rockport brown casual plain-toes (scuffed toes, and even if I could find polish in the right color, I dunno if it would really do the trick)
Bostonian brown loafers (3 months old)
Kenneth Cole Reaction black loafers (worn, scuffed, and loose)
Florsheim black loafers (new)
I love loafers. They're so good for loafing.

I think I got so used to my steel-toe hiking boots in college that I haven't fully gotten used to taking care of shoes, hence scuffs. :( I only have a couple shoe trees for the lot of these.

Aw, that makes me sad.

In HS my teachers were convinced I was ADD. The truth? BORED BORED BORED. Not shocking. Everybody knows I'm a genius.

Gump
03-31-2005, 01:38 AM
I know how that is. I basically spent first through third grade with teachers who were convinced I should be put in the "special" class. My parents finally put me in a Catholic school, because that's where the teachers who were willing to help me out rather than stash me away were hiding (not that private school didn't repeatedly kick my ass, of course).

The other day I thanked my parents for standing up for me back then, because I don't know where I'd be if they didn't. Fluffy music played, the audience went "aww," and we were all happy. My dad suggested we dance on my third grade teacher's grave, but I wouldn't go that far.

To this day, when I hear someone say they have ADD, it always sounds like an excuse.

To this day, when I hear someone say they have ADD, it always sounds like an excuse.

I'm convinced that for the majority, if not all, it is.

A HS friend of mine was officially diagnosed with ADD. She ended up writing a paper on how ADD is just a myth. She pretty much just came out and said, "I don't have a disorder, I'm just really lazy and I don't care all that much about my academic future." Which was true.

I think she got an A.

Time for the mice to play, I guess.

For years Sheri has told me the way to a girl's heart is through cereal in your pocket. I've always thought it was crap, honestly, but after having another conniving female play the "haha, I don't really like you as much as I was leading on" joke on me, I decided it wouldn't hurt to try. Since there's no one in particular I'm interested in, I just brought a little bag of cereal to school and gave it to every female I knew. Results were interesting, even considering I saw only a small number of females I know. Most refused the cereal, and the ones who took it looked at me all doe-eyed. This leads me to think that Sheri may actually know something, which destroys all notions I have about how the world functions.

I think I want to start embellishing my anecdotes to make them more outrageous. As it is, not enough weird stuff happens to me. I figure that if I advertise myself as having participated in any number of wacky situations (though I don't necessarily have to be intrinsically wacky, myself; I would merely be wacky by extension), I might get invited on more adventures in which I can rack up genuinely odd anecdotes.

I was going to make one up right now and try and pass it off as my one genuine anecdote, but I'm either dead tired or completely uncreative.

This is my first time with local anesthetic, I think. I went under for getting my wisdom teeth out in late high school or early college, and also when I had my extra baby teeth removed when I was like 6 or 8 or so. Nothing was that painful, but I definitely felt the needle for about 75% of the stitches. I also cringed whenever I felt the hint of snip-snip in my upper palate because I was worried those clippers were about 1 mm from delivering excruciating pain to a less anesthetized area. In short, I am a big sissy.

I'm supposed to wait 24 hours to rinse, but come on, that's disgusting. So I rinsed (gently) at about 10 hours, after sleeping for about 6. One of these pills is supposed to be a painkiller, but damn if I can tell it's doing anything. The pain's not bad, but it nags.

Gonna have fun figuring out how to brush and spit without dislodging clots.

--------------------

I got invited to a party late. Now, being invited is cool (nice to be thought of), and not being invited is cool (we've all got our own lives; I'm not going to expect to be invited to everything. Plus, I've personally invited many fewer people than I respect and care about). But getting invited late is a dis. Especially because I think I only got invited because one of the two organizers, S, happened to mention it in front of me. I could just imagine the second organizer, V, who was present, being like, "Shut up shut up shut up I didn't invite him!" Then it becomes one of those awkward situations where they feel obligated to invite me, regardless of whether anyone was interested in hanging out in the first place.

Remind me never to mention anything sensitive to S. At another event (where S & V first started planning the upcoming party), someone else was praising me, and I think we all knew he was lying through his teeth. But hey, that's how social things work, so I wasn't gonna bat an eye. And then S was like, "That's not what you said when we went out drinking!" I mean, I actually sympathized with lying-through-my-teeth guy. S just needs to shut up. Bitch starts more shit than prune juice.

I guess the abstracted pattern is that there are implicit dises all over in this world, and we can't sweat em because there's just too many of them and we can't afford to be pansies about that shit. But then when some stupid bitch has to make them explicit dises, then we're all uncomfortable.

Gum grafts. I don't know about you, but I usually associate the word "graft" with "burn victim," so you can imagine my reaction when my new dentist first suggested it. Apparently, brushing with hard and medium bristles in my youth has taken its toll on my gums, which have receded a bit and exposed roots of some teeth. I haven't noticed sensitivity when eating, but I feel it when the hygienist scales my teeth at the base, and the worry is that if it gets any worse that my teeth might lose bone support.

PSA: Soft bristles only!

And I've always been spotty with flossing, but I'm going to floss religiously now. I apparently only had a couple spots of localized gingivitis (blunted gums, minor sensitivity/bleeding), which my hygienist wasn't worried about at all (she barely mentioned it), but it's gross to find out you had a big piece of tartar crammed between two molars and you couldn't get at it otherwise.

For pain/swelling, I'm on Etodolac, the generic name for Lodine (http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/etodolac.htm). I still have a bottle of Codine sitting around from when I had viral conjunctivitis, but I didn't take that at the time because I figured I'd rather be in pain than taste that stuff again. Not that I'd mix drugs without asking a doctor...

There's always the quick, immediate solution: you just tell them that you're busy, but thanks for the invite.

Well, that's easy-- I actually do have other stuff going on that night. I was just griping about the awkward invite situation.

Rhys

I think I'm going to be better about flossing now too. Gum grafts do not sound fun at all.

dnl2ba
04-22-2005, 06:33 AM
Soft bristles! Soft bristles! Flossing is about preventing gingivitis from tartar build-up between teeth. Of course, with enough gingivitis, that would probably lead to gum grafts too.

Whenever I wake up, I have all kinds of yummy stuff in my mouth. Mmm-mmm!

I think the Lodine / whatever painkiller does make me drowsy. I slept something like 11, maybe 11 and a half hours last night if you stitch the bits together (I got up around 10:30 PM to shower and wash up).

God damn you. I slept five hours this morning, after working on a 20-page paper until 6 AM. I've never pulled an all-nighter on a school assignment before, and since I should be graduating on the first, it should be the last time. I only like all-nighters when they're absolutely necessary, like an anime marathon, or a Dynasty Warriors binge.

I actually just now finished another paper (that's three down, six more to go), and this is actually earlier than I expected to finish it, after last night. I mean, hell, I've stayed up till three before with or without using a paper as an excuse. As long as I get to hand it in tomorrow, I'm totally good.

Anyway, if someone wants to know anything about alchemy or Hermes Trismegistus, they can now ask me, because I'd like to feel as if I've learned something through that paper.

So my friends and I finally got around to playing Risk 2210 AD (or 2x10 AD-- I forget what the x is). Pretty good, but like the original Risk, turns at the end of the game take forever. On the plus side, it's limited to 5 turns, so the games can't go on forever like in Risk. Plus, amassing troops / Command Cards in new Risk is more reasonable than collecting Risk cards in the original, since the original would just get fucking crazy when people start turning in Risk card sets every turn.

We're doing 20th century music in theory right now. Late 20th century, as in 70's drug trip music. We had to write a piece, so here's what I came up with.

That's the piano score, which is a representation of new notation. The other part of the piece is me repeating the phrase "the happy crabs go marching off in a little row, but I'm all confused, there's a whole bunch of stuff going on" while putting marshmallows in my mouth. That's an example of absurd.

I've been hesitating to buy my latest batch of stuff from Amazon (music, books, movies) as I used to do every 4-6 weeks, since my last paycheck for a while will be in a week or two. Lots of this stuff has been sitting in my cart since February. But every now and then, I check my Amazon shopping cart again to see if anything delights me enough to make me buy it right then and there. And each time, a bunch of items go up in price $1! Is it punishment for not buying them?

I wouldn't be surprised if they just don't tell you when things go down in price, but man.

Fuck you and your no income tax. :(

Just Excel. I'm too dumb to track this stuff in Money or Quicken, so I actually track and categorize expenses in Excel. All cash is just counted as "fun," though it includes things like lunch, because it's too hard to track cash.

It's just stunning that I had two recent months where I spent as much as Oct '03, which is when I bought a ton of furniture and reimbursed my dad for the down payment on my car.

What happened to you in April that required that much health bar?

GUM GRAFTS

I just had my follow-up today. That flap that hung from my palate for half a week and then disappeared wasn't flesh (which worried me because they made a flap cut to pull out connective tissue, and I was worried the flap came undone and it'd never heal right); it was just the surgical dressing. Whew! They yanked the last of the sutures. Just a couple weeks till I can go back to brushing and flossing normally.

edit: haha, health bar. Made me think of video games.

Okay, here's the deal. If I end up broke, well, who knows what unspeakable things I'll have to do to make cash. But if I make it rich, you better believe I'm gonna blow it all on cocaine and hookers. I'll die young, but my corpse will have a HUGE grin.

Gump
05-08-2005, 05:52 AM
I never really saw the appeal of cocaine and hookers. Manga and video games always had the same effect on me as drugs, so adding more addictions would just be redundant, and with enough money, you can convince any girl to like you, so why waste my time with some cheap whore?

In all honesty, I would like to buy my grandfather's cabin back, if only to tell my kids and grandkids ghost stories about the former inhabitants and the green light my grandfather saw outside the window.

Rhys

Do I even have to say I was joking about cocaine and hookers?

Last night while doing dishes I dropped a knife and got an awesome cut on my left pinky. It's not too long, but it seems kind of deep. Of course it was hard to tell what with all the blood. I give myself bonus points for running from the kitchen to the bathroom without any getting on the floor. But I suppose those get taken away because the sight of so much blood made me so lightheaded I had to lie on the floor while squeezing my wrist to make the bleeding stop. Good times.

I was finally present in my apartment in a night time power outage, and got to see that nearby buildings lost power too. So my complex isn't to blame, but it's still annoying. There was another a couple days ago, too. Seems to be maybe once every 6-8 weeks on average.

I'll probably get a low-end UPS for each MC and my workstation. The outages have been lasting only a few seconds each (10s for this last one), so I don't need anything heavy-duty. I probably won't even support my monitors on it-- the point is just to keep the machines up and prevent server downtime, lost file transfers, etc.

XXX Link is a home run, d00der.

I'm probably 3/4 of the way through Minish Cap, and I still like it a lot, but I'm pissed off because I've got about a billion kinstone pieces and everyone in Hyrule wants to fuse the one green type that I don't have any of at the moment.

I've had ferrets since this January. They're awesome pets. Altho they don't quite go poing like Kiki from Sluggy Freelance, but it's close.

I saw that counter for most people online too and thought it was weird since I don't even think there are 51 registered users for this board. I was looking for a new place barber shop earlier today, and it was down to the $9 local place with a few good recommendations on the web vs. the schmancy salon in Palo Alto that starts at $40. Since I'm on a budget now, I went with the former. I started off thinking it was good, even though it was a lot shorter than I asked for. (It was hard to see what was going on because he had my pointed at a mirror on the other side of the room the whole time.) I've liked my new haircut less and less as the day's worn on, and now I regret giving the barber such a nice tip. I think I was just impressed because it's the first place that's ever leveled my sideburns with a straightedge razor.

Regardless of the cut I ask for, it seems I always like my hair best 2-3 weeks after a haircut, anyway. So maybe in the future, I'll have to second-guess myself.

The most I've ever paid for a haircut was $23 (also in Palo Alto, natch), but that's because I was such a judger (http://www.teamtechnology.co.uk/tt/t-articl/mb-simpl.htm) at the time that I would've felt uncomfortable deviating from my committed course even after seeing the price. So I just went through with it. And it was nice, because they also washed my hair first, though it didn't really help me any since I didn't know they'd do that and I'd already washed my own damn hair.

I'm thinking of cutting my own hair, just because I kind of don't care anymore.

Yeah, I always wash my hair before going the barber. I just go to some chain place in the mall (Mastercuts I believe it's called). They do a pretty craptastic job, usually go way too short on it, but after a week of growing in, it's satisfactory to my standards. It's about 10 bucks if I use my old college ID to get a student discount, so I don't complain. -_-

And Rhys should totally get a Flo-bee to cut your own hair! It's a marvel of 80s technology!

I care enough to not use a Flo-bee.

Grrrr...I had to mail out some catalogs today and the stamps.com sheets kept on getting stuck in the printer. To get a refund you have mail in this signed form with your destroyed/misprinted sheets. Well everytime I tried to print the postage to mail the misprinted sheets, the printer kept on misfeeding, so I'd have to fill out another form. In total, I just sent out 4 forms for refunds. I get clumsy when I'm impatient.

I'm starting to think that automobiles hate me. Today I had to take my car in to get its brakes fixed. That's the third time this month that this car has had to be taken in, and the third time it's been incapacitated right as I was about to go somewhere. Is this thing trying to tell me something?

So not that old... the only thing really going against it (besides maybe high mileage?) is that it's an American car.

ohvermie

I have had nothing but American cars (currently drive a 2000 Chevy Prizm and used to have a 88 Chevy Nova) and they didn't really have too many major problems. Of course these models were actually Japanese designs that Chevy bought and manufactured for this country, but that's besides the point!

I can hear fireworks and sort of see them from my window. Looks like they're maybe in San Jose somewhere...

...But it's cold by the window, so I'm going to sit here in front of my compubox and keep programming.

This weekend's been crazy fulla shit, and I'm having to cram every minute full of work/play/sleep, but that's how I like it. Sure beats dicking around for stuff to do.

Nausicaa and my set of 96 Tombow brush pens arrived. Found my N64, though I'd forgotten I have 3 first-party controllers and 3 shitty third-party ones, 2 of which I bought online based on pictures of first-party controllers... I laughed when CDUniverse.com went under. Gauntlet Legends, motherfucker! Classic Smash! Yeah!

You know, seeing someone and not remembering that you met them once isn't that bad since you normally just sorta cross paths and that's that. But I'm always worried I'm gonna hit on some chick and it'll turn out to be a friend of a friend and we met at a party or something. Or worse, met several times, or something like that. Everyone says they're bad with names, and some say they're bad with faces, but I can be REALLY fuckin terrible.

Dude, what is up with old ladies at churches wanting to touch you? Their skin is all leathery and they smell like bad perfume and it's horrible. Why, crazy old ladies, why!?

schally
07-10-2005, 10:11 PM
Because they are Reptoids and they want to devour your nubile young manflesh. When they touch your arm and pat your back and stuff they're just getting a taste to see if you're ripe.

Are you ripe, Rhys?

Gump
07-11-2005, 02:57 AM
I know I'm not ripe. In fact, I'm probably too stringy for any Reptoids. Eating me would probably be like munching on a toothpick.

That said, I've never encountered any grabby old ladies at any churches. Maybe your church is just weird, Rhys. Or maybe the Reptoids are just highly concentrated where you are.

Rhys
07-11-2005, 04:35 AM
I don't actually have a church. It was someone else's, I was just there playing flute. But anyway, I think there's not enough meat on me to satisfy. Though I'm sure I could be made into a delicious stock.

I've definitely lost it. I was washing up or something before strolling over to my computer. I had a fresh-feeling mental image of some Black Angus ad that said, "For people who really love steak." It felt like I'd seen it just seconds ago, but where would I have seen that in my apartment? So I retraced my steps. Twice. No Black Angus. TV's not on, no web banner ads, no scattered flyers or magazines around my apartment, nothin.

dnl2ba

Whether you believe in time travel or not, the good news is that you may not have to worry about accidentally creating a paradox (http://www.newscientist.com/channel/fundamentals/mg18625044.300) when your older, eccentric scientist friend sends you back in a Delorian.
