View Full Version : What's your main creative outlet?

Mmmkay what are you guys up to? Or what new thing do you want to try?

I still do the writin' thing. I'm working on two novels at the moment, which probably isn't the best idea, but one of them is a mystery and it was driving me fucking bananas so I started something else to give my mind a break.

Lately I've been toying with the idea of driving around and doing a little amateur photography. I haven't really gotten around to it yet, though.

I think I am totally washed up on drawing stuff. I don't think I've seriously attempted anything in about two years. It's amazing how fast your art muscle can go when you don't use it.

Roughly the same place, minus the photography. I've been trying to finish a novel for years now, but I keep reconceiving it in my head, and having to start over. I also have some short stories I've been meaning to send off since '04. I think I finally know how Tolkien felt.

One day in Valley, we were given an exercise in which we had to write down something we'd never done before, but would like to, and for some reason, I wrote "gardening." So my mom's trying to encourage me to start doing that, and I keep putting it off. Hopefully I'll end up with a better work schedule.

I experimented with drawing last week, and I think I've come up with a more natural, gestural style. I sometimes end up trying it on receipt paper at work, but they tend to frown on that.

The following isn't so much a creative outlet, but I don't know where else to put this: I'm becoming a bit of an amateur theologian. I've been gobbling up all these books on religion (most recently books by Marcus Borg and Bruce Chilton, as well as a book on the Talmud; I'd eventually like to go into Eastern philosophy--my Buddhism books have been sitting there unread for months), and I keep finding more that I desperately want to read. I kinda got this from my mom, so she's usually my main target when I want to talk about what I've learned. From what I can tell, it both fascinates her and annoys the heck out of her.

I do the freelance musician thing still. Sometimes I have to do church gigs, which is really boring because generally I'm playing for five minutes at most and have to sit through a two hour service to be polite. I enjoy doing recital stuff for music students, especially composition majors. They write some interesting things. I also get to do shows every once in a while, which usually satisfies me for a month or two. In fact starting in August, I get to continually do shows until the end of December.

Other than that, sometimes I'll grab my camera and take a few pictures of things I think are pretty. I have no idea if my pictures would be considered good by anyone, but I enjoy it. I did take some creative liscence with school assignments, but since I've dropped out for an indeterminate amount of time, that's not really an option.

I've been dabbling in photography. My dad has given me his really sweet old school Minolta SLR from the 70s and it's totally boss. The only downside is that film/processing is hella expensive, so I might someday just bite the bullet and get a digital SLR.

Also, I've been contemplating buying myself an electric guitar and teaching myself, but I think that's more of a seed planted by playing Guitar Hero on PS2 a lot. Y'know, if I can do it in a video game, I can do it in real life (I wanted to try skateboarding during my huge Tony Hawk Pro Skater playing phase).

nothing.
I figured you'd say something about design or drawery.

Gump, I too wish to partake of gardening, but it'll have to wait until I live in a dog-free environment since they're hellbent on consuming everything of mine that's in the yard.

Dear photographers: flickr plz. You know you want to.

Rhys's Flickr thingy! (http://www.flickr.com/photos/happycrab/)

I don't really understand Flickr, so I don't know if that will work correctly. Cross your fingers.

Those are really nice. If I wasn't too lazy to scan all my photos I'd Flickr it up. Lemme see if I can grab some pics off the digital, but they're going to be boring since they're mostly potential wedding sites.

Seconding. Hawaii is awesome. I bet they've got dry heat, too.

Take it from me: humidity is for the dogs.

Hawaii is all about the humidity actually. Especially in Hilo. If it isn't raining, the moisture is just hanging in the air waiting until it does. When I first came to the mainland I dried out like a raisin.

Made a Flickr account during the dark time. I have a couple rolls I took during the Renaissance Fair this year, but I still have to get them developed. There's also older shit that I took while in college, but they're framed and I don't feel like breaking them down to scan them. I do assure you though, they are nice. ;p

Oh look, they're all artsy! My Flickr account is full of pictures of drunk Asian people.
